I just received a disheartening email today from a subscriber today. He tells me that he can no longer do anything internet marketing related, because he literally doesn't even have $10 to invest. He asked me if there's anything he can do to improve his situation. I sent him the following email:

Dear (Subscriber Name),

I understand your scenario. In fact, not too long ago, my husband and I found ourselves in a very similar circumstance. With mounting debt, and no money or much time to spend we were literally lost and didn't know what to do. After discussing our options, which was:

A) Stop internet marketing altogether and focus on our jobs
B) Stop working our jobs and focus on internet marketing (wouldn't pay the bills right away, which is why we didn't do this)
C) Work full time on our jobs, and part time on creating a business.

After going over our options we decided on choice C. We needed to pay the bills, but we also needed to work on creating a business for ourselves. But with the myriad of business opportunities out there, we needed to focus. We simply decided on one marketing method and went after it with all of our energy and effort, until we felt like we mastered it. Then after we felt like we understood exactly what we were doing, we would move on to the next marketing vehicle.

Far too often, what you'll find with brand new internet marketers is that they are juggling 50 things at once, which sounds like what you were doing. They get to the point where they've subscribed to 20 membership sites, have countless e-books, have all the knowledge in the world, but don't have one thing to show for it. If you want to succeed, learn to say no. Say no to following every hot opportunity that comes your way. Say no to divesting your energy in more than 1 program or project at a time. Say no to investing your hard earned money into various membership sites, e-books, or products that you don't really need. If you follow these 5 simple rules, I think it'll help get you on track:

1) FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS

The internet marketing business is a business so treat it like one. For us, it meant cutting out T.V. after we got home from work to start writing articles. Our method of choice for marketing was writing articles. We literally learned everything we could about the process and focused all of our energy on this technique alone. We focused on this until we streamlined our work. We then outsourced some of the article writing to others. This, in turn, let us focus on other marketing avenues. One of the biggest problems for earning money online is that everyday there is some new opportunity that offers a great promise to you. You chase this opportunity because what you were doing didn't produce the overnight results you've heard so many people achieve. So you jump from what you had set out to do onto some new opportunity, before you gave your first attempt any real chance of succeeding. Remember, success doesn't come overnight. Work hard and focus on one thing: the basics.

2) BE CONSISTENT

I don't care if the super bowl is on. I don't care if you love Eli Manning or Tom Brady. When you watch television you're making them and the various advertisers rich. Why not instead, build your own dreams during your free time, instead of theirs. So be consistent in whatever you do to promote your product or service. If you write articles, set a goal to write 5 articles a day. If you post on forums, set a goal to get 10-15 forum posts out every day. If you do joint venture projects, set a goal to find 1-2 joint venture partners every day. In other words, whatever you marketing method is, make sure you are consistent with it.

3) JUST DO IT

Decide on one marketing method and just go for it. Don't second guess it, don't question it. Just do it. For my husband and I, we went back to the very basics. We thought, what drives the internet... our answer - information. What has worked time and time again for people, and is just as successful today as it was 8 years ago when my husband started on the internet - article writing. We went back to the basics and it has paid off for us ever since. After we chose article marketing, we didn't look back. We just wrote and wrote and wrote (and continue to write under various pen names) until our goal was met.

4) TEST AND TRACK EVERYTHING

If something worked on your site or didn't, how would you know? Because of this, we have webstats on all of our webpages. We look at how many of our articles get read. We look at our visitors to newsletter subscription ratios. We look at our newsletter subscription to one time offer (OTOs) purchases. We look at how many people subscribe to our membership sites. In other words, we create metrics to measure all of our marketing efforts. By doing so it allows us to see where we should be focusing on, and what things provide us with the greatest return on our investment with regards to time, money, and energy.

5) BE THE BEST

Our society values specialized knowledge. The internet is no different. So try and make it your goal to be the very best at whatever marketing method you've chosen to focus on. If you strive to be the best and devour all the information related to your product, then people will look to you for information and advice. People will buy your specialized knowledge. So get in the trenches and learn the ins and outs of your chosen marketing vehicle.

6) GIVE TO GET

Have you heard of the law of reciprocity? People often give back what they feel like gotten in return. My suggestion is to share what you've learned with other people. Write your articles, create a blog, open a myspace account and share all your ideas, plans, discoveries, and knowledge with others. This will help brand you as an expert your marketing arena, and overtime, people will naturally look (and buy) to you for guidance.

7) FOLLOW-UP

Here's a secret formula that my husband and I have used with great success. Master this and you should do well with your efforts online:
