Whether you attribute this quote to Horace Greeley or the original author, Thomas Soule, it came to epitomize the geographical expansion of the United States into the nation that it is today. If only all directions were so simple. Just face the setting sun and start walking.
Whether you attribute this quote to Horace Greeley or the original author, Thomas Soule, it came to epitomize the geographical expansion of the United States into the nation that it is today. If only all directions were so simple. Just face the setting sun and start walking. Unfortunately, in the real world, and even more so in the world of Internet Marketing, direction is something that many people need but too few ever make a serious effort to discover. Then again, if everything about Internet Marketing was that simple, everybody would be doing it and nobody would be making any money with it. So perhaps, in some ways at least, it is better that not everybody is going to be successful in Internet Marketing. That does not mean that they cannot be, only that they have to discover a sense of direction and purpose in order to accomplish what they need to become the next success story. Picking a direction is not enough. You can pick a direction and go a mile each day and it will take you a very long time to cover any real ground. On the other hand, you may want to stop in every little town you pass. While you will still make some progress, all of the distractions will still prevent you from getting anywhere in a hurry. However, if you have a definitive plan from start to finish, make allowances for the occasional tank of gas, flat tire or even a thrown horseshoe, you will still make enough progress to make the journey worthwhile. Internet Marketing is an adventure and as such, it can be compared with similar analogies. Map out your route carefully and figure out where you are, think about where you want to be, and then layout a road map of your own showing you how to get there. Even if you do suffer setbacks from time to time or even an occasional detour, you will be able to overcome them as long as you are already prepared for those situations. It is not that easy of course but you get the picture. You must have a particular destination in mind before you set out on your journey. Certainly, it is easier to get somewhere if you do not know where you are going. Any road will take you there too. How will you know when you get there? When you are happy with the results? Will they be maintainable? Will you be capable of retracing your steps to repeat the process a second or third time? Rather than looking at the enormity of the task in front of you, try setting up with individual goals and milestones to mark your journey. Your first goal could be anything from your first membership site to the creation of your very own product to making your first dollar online. Once your first goal has been attained, you can keep your eyes on your next goal and the journey becomes easier. You may have to swerve to avoid the occasional obstacle. You may even have to take some detours, change a flat tire or even fix a horseshoe if you prefer the slower routes. Still, you will be able to not only see your progress but track it as well. As you continue in your journey, your final goal no longer seems like such a distant and foreboding target but a realistic possibility that you know you can reach as long as you continue along the path that you have set out for yourself. Make your path and stick to it. Do not jump off at every exit or stop to smell too many of the roses. Set your destination and take action to get there, and you could very well be the next Internet Marketing success story. |
