Don't you just love those top 10 lists? And now the number one reason why you should never take a shower with your clothes on. Okay, some of them are pretty dumb. But if you're going to make a top 10 list of Internet marketing tips, this one would have to come at the very top of the list as far as niche marketing goes. I'm talking about researching your market to see if anybody gives a rat's behind about what you want to sell. This article is going to take a very hard and honest look at this subject...even to the extent of highlighting my biggest failure online...where I made ZERO sales with a totally unique product.

Why don't we begin there? Many years ago I developed a product in a certain niche that was absolutely unique. As a matter of fact, it was so unique that I recently put in for a trademark. Nothing like this had ever come out before. I never really thought about marketing it until I had achieved some success online and since I didn't want 25 years of work to go to waste, I finally released it. Know what my results have been since that initial release?

After a press release, contacting over 250 web sites, putting up six Squidoo lenses, a blog and telling everybody I could think of about my new creation, one month later I have two opt ins and ZERO sales. Not something to be proud of, is it. So what happened? I'll tell you what happened.

Nobody gave a rat's behind about this product. I didn't research the market first. Well heck, 25 years ago there wasn't an Internet so I wouldn't have been able to do research through the Internet. And 25 years ago I didn't know beans about marketing anyway. If I had, I probably would have never created this product. But I did, and it bombed.

After the fact, I did do some research and guess what I discovered? The market for this kind of product died about 10 years ago. Had I done the research prior to spending money on a press release and a trademark application, I would have known this was a waste of time and saved myself some money.

For somebody who banks six figures a year to not make ONE sale of a product, you have to know that there is just NO demand. So before you go hog wild in creating your "wonder box" make sure that there are enough people out there who care enough to find out what's in it.
