Is passion required for the topic of choice when it comes to Internet Marketing and earning a living online? There have been good arguments both for and against being personally involved in your particular niche. So what is the real scoop and why does it matter to you? Arguably, being passionate about something means that there is a very real personal interest in the subject matter. So how is it that this may be construed as a bad thing in any way? Most of the time, when someone is passionate about a subject, they know a great deal about that topic. Have you ever heard the old saying about not being able to see the forest for the trees? The same reasoning applies here as well. When a person has an intimate knowledge about a subject, they are often more likely to make assumptions than someone who knows absolutely nothing about the topic. While this may be okay if their web site is marketing strictly to others with an equal knowledge for that niche, it still alienates many potential readers, who in turn are also potential customers. For example, somebody who is heavily involved with cross-stitching or needlepoint may overlook something as simple as the fact that some of their readers will not be familiar with all of the knots associated with the work. While many of the readers may be impervious to any detrimental results from such an oversight, some prospective readers may be forced to look elsewhere for more in-depth information about the subject so that they can learn more efficiently. It should be easy to see that alienating a large potential customer base would definitely have a negative impact on your overall business. This holds true in the online realm for VRE as much as it does in the "Brick and mortar" world. Still, it is not very likely that someone who lives on a low fat, low salt diet will be opening an Italian restaurant with all of the fervor and devotion as someone with a great passion for Italian cuisine would. A complete lack of interest or passion about a subject however, can be every bit as harmful to your business venture, your reputation and your profits. Not knowing about a subject will increase the likelihood that simple mistakes may occur on your web site and you are never even aware of their presence, much less the implications for your business venture. Even if the mistakes in information are relatively minor and of little consequence to some of your readers, many others will be put off by your apparent lack of concern for the facts and will find other resources for their information. This will carry over into their purchasing habits as well. If they do not trust the material that you provide, they are not very likely to trust your products either. Ultimately, you will have to develop your own delicate balance between business and passion. As with any tools for establishing and building up a business, the tools have to be used properly in order to maximize the results. How you choose to do so is up to you. However, if you are going to take enough interest in a project to develop a business around it, it will never hurt you to know something about what you are getting involved with. |
