Twenty Steps to Internet Marketing 11 - Thou Shalt Upload Web Pages to Your Server
After you have created a web page containing your precious sales letter or other priceless information, you will want to upload your files to your hosting companies server. Most of us use a file transport protocol cleverly called FTP. HTTP is another file transfer protocol with which you are more familiar. Here is how to upload your files to your server.

After you have created a web page containing your precious sales letter or other priceless information, you will want to upload your files to your hosting companies server. Most of us use a file transport protocol cleverly called FTP. HTTP is another file transfer protocol with which you are more familiar.

Many HTML editors have file uploading functions. I use CoffeeCup Direct FTP. It lists all of my sites, keeps track of where my files are for each site, and keeps track of the passwords and identities. There are free software programs on the Internet too.

In order for your FTP program to manage files that you want to upload to your server, you will have to tell the program the name of your server, called the host name. For example, using a site called www.mysite.com, your program may require you to simply add the name "mysite.com" to your list of servers. Some programs want the whole name: www.mysite.com.

You will be able to add the short name for your site which is your user name, and also, your password. You must do this or the Program will not be able to enter your site.

There are some boxes to click. Check "passive mode" and "save password."

If the port box is not completed for you, put "21" in the box. In the time out box, put "120" (seconds).

Now it will ask for the connection type, put "FTP."

Files will be loaded from your local folder, the file folder where you store your work. You can list the name of this folder when you are setting up FTP. When you connect to your server, the file folder should show up to the left and you can upload any file by right clicking on the file name and choosing "upload."

Remember that your server will be looking for a file called index.html. Make sure that is the name of your main page for your site (or sites).

You should read your instructions carefully from the hosting company. You may have to load your files in a designated file such as "htmldocs."

Maybe not.

Read the instructions that were sent to you by your hosting company.

If you are in the correct folder on your server, you will be able to find a file called "index.html." Replace it with your index file simply by uploading your file. As I said, you upload that from your local folder.

Go to pageresource.com for FTP tutorials.

I just put "FTP software" in the Google search box. There were only 8,680,000 entries.

If you have never uploaded files before, have a friend tell you how to do it. If you are with GoDaddy.com, you can get them on the telephone and they will walk you through it. Any hosting company's technical staff will give you the same help.

Actually once you have an FTP software program, free or otherwise, it will take you through the steps. Again, you will need the login ID and the Password you have chosen. You need to know if there is a special file on the server that you must FTP your files.

Wealthy Affiliate University will create your web pages and upload them to their server. So that is one way to get started. It eliminates thinking.

When you are placing files on your server, you will see that they are all listed. If you FTP your index file to the server and the file does not show up, but another default index file does, you are not in the correct folder. Move your file to the correct folder. Again, when you upload it, it will replace the default file.

You can treat your files on the server just like you can in the file folders on your computer. Say that a page file does not come up when you click a link in your pages. It may have a different name. An example is when a file should be named wow.html and you have uploaded wow.htm. Just click on the name of the file on your server and rename it wow.html. Now it should come up.

Don't stop now! Keep plugin' along!
