The importance of good mentoring becomes evident as we recognize the value of networking and maintaining relationships throughout our business career and the value of a good mentor is immeasurable when it comes to learning the insights of the industry. A mentor is someone with more entrepreneurial business experience than you who serves as a trusted confidante over an extended period of time, usually free of charge. Why do they do this? First and foremost as a way of giving back to their community and to society at large. They may do it to develop their skills as a teacher, manager, strategist, or consultant. Good mentors introduce their new recruits to others within the industry. They will offer support and assistance until you feel comfortable in the work setting. As time goes on, professional mentoring often becomes a two way street and offers benefits to both parties. Your mentor, being an experienced businessperson, is likely to have an extensive network, and can offer you access to far more senior decision-makers than you currently have. And they will be far more willing to open that network up to you than some casual acquaintance from a networking meeting. Everybody needs a good reliable sounding board, second opinion, and sometimes just emotional support. A mentor can help to alleviate much of the frustration interns often feel in their first few months on the internship. By sharing their insight and knowledge of the industry, new recruits (newbies) in the field can be spared a great deal of stress which is often felt by newbies when acclimating to a new environment. A good mentor can advise and support the newbie (intern) and help avoid an unnecessary feelings of incompetence and isolation. With mutual respect, demonstrated through action as well as attitude, your mentoring relationship can be mutually rewarding. However, many of beginner marketers do not quite understand the role of mentor. They expect that mentor will walk them by hand to accomplish their mission. In fact what the newbie marketers are looking for is one-to-one training or coaching which will take them through the process of building their own online business. |
