With Christians just as sick as any other segment of the world you might say, you're kidding, right? We know God loves us, but many may think that being ill is their "cross" to bear since God hasn't answered their prayers for healing. Some people think that God just wants them sick. Just look at Paul who asked three times for a thorn in the flesh to be removed, but God said "No". (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

But if God wants you sick why do you keep going to doctors? If that's your "cross" to bear then bear it without complaining.

Most scholars and pastors will tell you that Paul's "thorn in the flesh" was likely a physical ailment of some kind but, Paul doesn't actually tell us what this so called ailment was or that it was an ailment at all. Scripture just says that he asked for it to be removed three times and God said "no, My power is made perfect in weakness."

I have other news for you. Here's what I've found out in my research. I did a word search on an online Bible program called Biblos.com. I came up with seven references to "thorn in the flesh" that didn't deal with a physical ailment. As a matter of fact the references were like the analogy of having a "pain in the neck" referring to another person being an irritant.

  • ...inhabitants...shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein you dwell. Numbers 33:55
  • ...a pricking brier to the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them Ezekiel 28:24
  • ...be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with you, and you do dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words...Ezekiel 2:6
  • The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge... Micah 7:4
  • ...they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes... Joshua 23:13
  • ...but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you. Judges 2:3
  • But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away,.. 2 Samuel 23:6

All of them refer to people! People who were irritants and pains in the neck. People who were not Godly but from Satan just as Paul says his messenger was. A messenger who was sent to torment and be a pain in the neck or a thorn in the flesh.

I submit to you that God didn't refuse to heal Paul from an ailment but refused to take away the person(s) who was causing him grief. Just as we sometimes need to keep dealing with co-workers, friends and even family members who are pains in the lower part of our anatomy. God's power is made perfect in our weakness to deal with others because we would like to use our sinful self to solve the problem. But we must rely on God's directive to forgive 70 times seven and to live peaceably with everyone.

Jesus on the other hand healed all who came to Him. He even raised people from the dead. Jesus never did anything against the Father's will or permission. Everything that Jesus did came from the Father. He NEVER turned anyone away. We have verses like:

  • Psalm 103:3...who heals all your diseases;
  • Exodus 15:26...I am Yahweh who heals you."
  • Psalms 107:20 He sends his word, and heals them...
  • Matthew 10:1...heal every disease and every sickness.
  • Luke 4:40...on every one of them, and healed them.

And there are numerous other verses where God heals those who ask. So now you are wondering where that leaves you since you have asked repeatedly for healing to no avail. Which brings us to Mark 6:5 which talks about Jesus not being able to do no mighty work but just a few sparse healings.

Why couldn't Jesus do no mighty work in His own hometown? He was amazed at their unbelief! So faith that God can and wants to heal you is essential. But is that all? Not according to Exodus 15:26. We need to listen to the voice of God, do that which is right in his eyes, and pay attention to his commandments.

We as Christians need to set ourselves apart; to be in the world but not be of the world, to have no other gods but God the Father, God the Word and God the Spirit as the Hebrew explains God "plural unity" and to forgive and love our neighbors as ourselves.

So do you watch the same TV shows and movies, listen to the same music, look at the same internet sites and eat the same Standard American diet as the rest of society? Are you fearful or put all your trust in any other method or practitioner other than the God of the Bible? Are you bitter, resentful, envious, spiteful, anxious, hate yourself or others? It's not a matter of following the letter of the law perfectly so God will heal you, it's about desiring to follow what God has told us is best for us because He loves us. It's about loving Him, listening to Him by reading His Word and setting ourselves apart as He has asked us to do.

In Matthew 7:9-11 God asks us if we as parents would give a stone to our son if he asked us for bread or would we give a snake to our child if they asked for a fish. If we who are flawed human beings give good gifts to our children then how much more can we expect from a perfect Father which is in heaven to give good things to them that ask him?

But just as you love your children and love should be unconditional, you don't reward bad behavior. You don't give your child a nice present when they curse at you or call you names or play with matches when you've asked them not to. You don't shower them with gifts when they kick their siblings or won't share their toys.

As a child of God how are you setting yourself apart from the rest of the world so your Father can bestow His Child with good gifts? He already has given His life for you. He wants you well and for you to prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.
