We have all heard of the Ego and the Id. Most of us have learned to associate the Ego in a negative light. "Oh, he sure has a big Ego" or "You can see her Ego before they even got pass the doorway!" And yes, some of us do live with our Egos guiding us or leading us. Sometimes we do this as a form of habit or a way to protect ourselves from the outside world. How many times have you put up walls around yourself? When? Have you noticed when you put up these walls? When you think about it, we do it all the time even without noticing it. The alternative is to have our heart and soul open to being venerable. And in a world like ours, sometimes that is just too scary.

Follow me for a moment- Can we be still enough to slow down the mind long enough to connect with our heart and soul and trust our gut to lead us? Can we trust knowing that everything we need is inside of ourselves just waiting for us to tap into it? Can we be venerable with our selves and others around us? Can you imagine a few moments every day where the chatter of the mind is silent? I call it the "itty bitty chatter box committee." Do you have a name for yours?

At this point you probably get what I am saying, but you are still unsure how we can totally turn off the Ego or the Mind. I am not suggesting that the Ego is bad here; it certainly has its place in our everyday life. I am not suggesting that we completely turn off the ego and its protection, but can we trust in ourselves to not have to lead with the Ego ALL of the time. Are we able to let go and be with our true self; our soul self? The great masters would say, "Yes, this is possible.....be patient and committed to practice each day."

Maybe an example might help you see where I am going with this. At a contemplative retreat last fall along the Mackenzie River in Oregon where we remained in silence for four days, we spent a lot of time in nature and completed different exercises as part of the retreat. One of these exercises was to write a letter from our Ego to our Soul self. I would like to share my letter.

Dear Soul Self,

I know what your truest desire is. I know that you are shy and do not want others to see your vulnerability. Just how venerable you can be. So, I help to protect you by keeping those walls up.

I am the one that keeps you hidden when you feel that you are not strong enough. I see you struggle. I also see when you do not need me and you are able to trust your gut and heart and let go of your head. Know that I am here to catch you when you fall, help you reorganize, help you figure things out; protect you until you are able to go out again.

I know you need to feel secure. Even more, I know that your truest desire is to love and be loved. I know that you do not want to grow old alone.

I know it frightens you that you have loved and been told that you are loved only to have that love go away. I know you grow tired.

I know you retreat and hide and do not share your inner thoughts with others. And this leads for some to have misconceptions about who you are. Those who truly know you, see your strength and vulnerability at the same time.

I am here to tell you, my Soul Self that you have grown immensely in the last few years. You are strong and need not fear being venerable and opening your heart to others. Let go of those walls. You do not need me.
I do not guarantee that you will not experience any more pain or struggles. But I do know this, true love, one that is real, will not leave you. Just as I have not left you, just as your gut and heart have not left you, just as God will not leave you. Remember, my dear child, you are protected and guided to go into that space of fearless bliss.
