Follow the Golden Rule of Free Web Traffic Generation |
|
I learned from highly reliable sources that the customer is never right when they are wrong. If you know what is best for them then you do what is best for them... period. After the noise died down and our blood pressures were back to normal, I asked my client a simple question; "Do you want traffic or do you want sales?"
I got screamed at once when a chiropractor I worked with got fed up with his slow progress in web traffic response. He was beet red and fuming. I tried to calm him down by making a joke but it didn't work out very well. He wanted to know why I was charging him for a traffic generation system that didn't do squat.
If you've tried to show a client how to market online, you might have fallen into the trap of being herded into doing things their way. Sometimes out of exasperation you go ahead and do it their way to shut them up and get on with life. I was thinking of doing just that when I realized that I would be breaking my own Golden Rule.
I learned from highly reliable sources that the customer is never right when they are wrong. If you know what is best for them then you do what is best for them... period. After the noise died down and our blood pressures were back to normal, I asked my client a simple question; "Do you want traffic or do you want sales?"
He immediately realized where I was going with this but could not stop himself; "sales" he said. I proceeded to draw six boxes on a sheet of paper to show him what we were doing right and why getting the right kind of traffic was more important than simply seeing immediate traffic. - We were currently doing the following:
- Creating articles
- Putting together six short videos
- Building his auto-responder lists
- Collecting emails from his old client list
- Sending out a series postcards
- Writing his blog
It had been three weeks and he felt that nothing was producing any more traffic than he had before. Sure there were a few signups, but nothing near what we chose as his daily objective. He forgot about the part that I mentioned that it takes up to 30 days to really see significant progress in targeted traffic generation. His website ranked 209 in several keyword and phrases.
The Golden Rule of free targeted traffic generation is that "You shall not accept just any traffic but highly targeted traffic in need of your offer." It makes no sense to brag about getting 100 signups a day on your auto-responder if nobody is buying. At that point, you are a list collector not an online business person who makes a living from the web.
The reason that targeted free traffic sources take a bit longer than other methods is because it has a snowball effect. An article can take a week to post; then it will be viewed as a new entry by those who are looking for your keyword or phrase. If they like your writing, they will click your link to see what you have to offer.
The same goes for blogging. It takes time to develop the subscriber base or for your social network to grow. The reason why you want to bring in only targeted subscribers is because the ones who take the time to check you out are interested in what you have to offer.
Mix and match your methods but keep it simple. Remember the Golden Rule of targeted free traffic; "You shall not accept just any traffic, but highly targeted traffic in need of your offer." |
